DesignBuilder — building energy-performance simulation
A full-stack energy compliance platform with a distributed EnergyPlus/EPC job pipeline, a Three.js 3D building viewer, and revision workflows used in production in Israel.

Overview
DesignBuilder is building energy-performance simulation software. Teams model buildings, run EnergyPlus/EPC simulations, compare revisions, and package results for inspectors at a volume that a single machine cannot absorb.
I owned the full-stack product (React/TypeScript, Node/Express, MongoDB) and the distributed job pipeline behind it.
Approach
Simulations run on a dispatcher plus Windows workers: a MongoDB-backed queue, pull-based dispatch, retries and timeouts, and AWS Auto Scaling of worker capacity. External EPC CLI simulators are wired into workers (input prep → run → parse/collect → completion), with multi-version routing and Amazon vs on-prem worker affinity.
On the product side:
- A Three.js 3D building viewer (IDF geometry) with inspection tooling for zones, envelope, and SHGC/solar, gated by org feature flags
- Revisions lifecycle, results packaging to S3/Drive, and PDF validation reports
- Admin job-queue monitoring, multi-tenant orgs, permissions, and revision compare/analysis views
- Operational hardening: cron roles, maintenance mode, and worker auth
Outcome
A production energy-compliance platform that holds up at high simulation volume not a demo UI on top of a local run. Teams can compare alternatives, inspect the 3D model, and ship validation reports without babysitting the queue.
